1. Park it

Dogs are welcome in almost all of the parks in Boston — with many designated specifically as dog parks. But there are specific rules to keep in mind when visiting them. a. Keep your dog on a leash… Boston Park rules require a leash of up to eight feet, which is more than enough for your dog to run around while still keeping control. This is important if you walk your dog near areas for kids like sandboxes, ball fields, and playgrounds. A leash will keep your playful pup from bee-lining right to the kids at the park. b. …or visit off-leash spaces. Some Boston parks have been designated off-leash parks. These are great if you'd rather let your dog run free. Some of our favorites include: • Peters Park in the South End • DeFilippo (RUFF) Playground in the North End • Designated areas of Boston Common • Downer Avenue Playground in Dorchester • Garvey Playground in Dorchester • Ronan Park in Dorchester A special note for Boston Common: Keep an eye out for the signs around the lawn sections. The off-leash spaces rotate depending on the rules established by Common Canine, the Boston Common off-leash dog program. c. Pick up your doggy's doo-doo While it's simply courteous to clean up after your dog, it's also a legal requirement in Boston parks — and you want to abide by the Boston Pooper Scooper Law to avoid fines. It’s a good idea to carry a plastic bag with you when you go for walks (no matter how short), and always dispose of the poop in the proper trash bins.
